Tax Considerations….The Belleville Area: Whoops...wrong data below....get the right stuff, Merrill! For general tax circumstances in Illinois, see the "Taxes" section o f the Illinois Overview, on this site, where real estate taxes, sales taxes, gasoline taxes and income taxes are described. Illinois relies primarily on local real estate taxes and income taxes to support local schools….(with dependence on real estate more, and income taxes less, than in neighboring Missouri.) Here's a breakdown of a typical 2009 real estate tax bill for Belleville (the bill payable 2010, and rates don't change much year to year.)
Keep in mind that in Illinois, assessed values are 1/3 of "real", and that this rate applies to the assessed value, equals $ 6.64 per $ 1000 of assessed value, or 6.64% of assessed value. Obviously, the breakdown shows exactly where the tax money goes, too, and the preponderance goes to local schools. Real Estate Taxes in the Edwardsville area are not out of line with other good communities in SW Illinois. Illinois also provides for some deductions against real estate taxes on all owner-occupied homes, and other deductions for senior citizens.
